Tracking Training Load as an Amateur — How to Avoid Overtraining Using Charts
You have a PMC chart, CTL climbing week over week, form seemingly on the rise — and then, without warning, a week of heavy legs, irritability, and empty sessions arrives. The chart itself doesn't protect you from overtraining — what protects you is how fast you let that load rise. Why a rising CTL doesn't mean "safe"
CTL (Chronic Training Load) is a weighted average of load over roughly the last 42 days. It can climb smoothly on the chart while your body catches up to that increase with a shrinking margin. The issue isn't the CTL level itself — riders with CTL 80 and CTL 120 can be equally safe or equally overtrained, depending on how fast they got there.
Ramp rate — the pace of increase, not the level
Ramp rate is the week-over-week change in CTL. That number, not CTL itself, correlates best with overtraining and injury risk for amateurs. A commonly used, practically validated rule of thumb:

These are rough thresholds, not physical law — they depend on your baseline CTL, training age, and injury history. But the underlying principle holds: a sudden spike in load hurts more than a high but stable level.
How to actually check this every week
- Log CTL on the same day of the week (e.g. every Monday) — eyeballing comparisons across different days distorts the trend.
- Calculate the week-over-week difference, not month-over-month — monthly averaging masks sharp spikes in between.
- If your ramp rate exceeds your safe threshold two weeks in a row, plan a lighter week before your body forces one on you.
- Treat TSB (Training Stress Balance) as a supporting signal: a deeply negative TSB (below -25/-30) held for weeks, combined with a high ramp rate, is the most dangerous combination.
Why amateurs break this rule more often than pros
A pro has a coach watching their ramp rate for them. An amateur usually reacts to motivation: a good week of form → adds two extra sessions → CTL jumps → the bill arrives a week later. This isn't a discipline problem, it's a visibility problem — without a chart of the rate of change, the decision "I'll add one more session" feels neutral, but it's cumulative.
Worth remembering too: a single session's TSS tells you nothing about risk on its own — it's the sum and the pace at which it accumulates over time that makes the difference.
What to do if you've already exceeded a safe ramp rate
If you notice the overshoot after the fact, don't panic and don't cut training entirely. Plan a deliberate recovery week (cutting volume by 30–50%, not to zero), watch perceived fatigue and resting heart rate for a few days, and resume progression at a lower ramp rate.
