Bike Insurance — Liability, Theft and Damage Cover: Is It Worth It?
A €2,300 bike stolen from outside a shop. A collision with a pedestrian on a cycle path. A broken collarbone on a group ride. Each of these can cost thousands — bike insurance covers those costs for a few euros a year. This article describes the Polish market, where cover comes in three parts: OC, AC and NNW.
Cyclist's OC — third-party liability
Covers the damage you cause to others: hitting a pedestrian, damaging a car, a collision with another cyclist. In Poland, cyclist liability insurance is not compulsory, but the consequences of having none can be serious — compensation for bodily injury can run into thousands of euros.
Cyclist liability cover is often part of personal liability insurance — check your home insurance policy, you may already have it.
Bike AC — theft and damage
Covers theft of the bike and mechanical damage (an accident, vandalism). What to look out for:
- Security requirements — the policy may require a specific type of lock (e.g. ART 2+ or Sold Secure Gold certification). Without it — the claim is refused.
- Excess — your own share of the loss. 10–20% is the norm.
- Territorial scope — does the policy work abroad (cycling trips)?
- Value of the bike — the insurer may apply depreciation (e.g. -20% after a year). Check whether the policy pays the replacement value or the book value.
NNW — personal accident insurance
Covers your own injuries: fractures, surgery, rehabilitation. Cyclists are more exposed than drivers — no car body around them, higher speeds than pedestrians. Accident cover costs €12–45 a year and is worth the price.
How much does it cost?
| Policy | Annual cost (approximate) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Cyclist's liability (OC) | €7–20 | Damage caused to others |
| Bike AC (a €1,200 bike) | €35–95 | Theft, damage |
| Personal accident (NNW) | €12–45 | Your injuries |
| Package (OC + AC + NNW) | €45–115 | Comprehensive protection |
When is it worth it?
- A bike worth more than €700 — theft and damage cover starts to make economic sense
- Commuting — parking in the city every day = a higher risk of theft
- Races and marathons — accident cover is often required by the organiser
- Trips abroad — check whether your travel insurance covers the bike
