About the climb
Monte Zoncolan from Ovaro rises above the Carnic Alps in Friuli, north-east Italy. It is the steepest climb on this list: 9.8 km from 505 m to 1686 m, 1182 m of climbing at 12.1% on average, with the steepest 200 m on our track at 19.9%.
The first 2.5 km at 6 to 11% are only the approach. From 2.5 km to 7 km the road climbs at 14 to 18% in every 500 m section, four and a half kilometres averaging around 15.5%. The gradient then drops to 11 to 14% for another 1.5 km, and the last 1.3 km ease off to 4 to 9% before the summit.
Pacing tip: the calculator puts a 75 kg rider at 3.0 W/kg on 1 h 17 min, at an average speed well under 10 km/h. Use the lowest gear you have from the start of the steep section, keep your cadence as high as you can, and save a little for the 11 to 14% kilometre that follows it.

Real climbs take longer when you start too hard, stop, or ride into a headwind. Treat the number as the pace to aim for, not a promise.
