About the climb
The climb to the Lagos de Covadonga starts at Covadonga in Asturias, northern Spain, and climbs into the Picos de Europa. On our track it runs 12.4 km from 259 m to the lakes at 1080 m, with 919 m of climbing in total and an average of 6.6%.
That average includes flat and downhill sections. After a level first kilometre, the road climbs at 7 to 14% almost continuously until 7.5 km, about 10% on average, with the steepest 500 m (14%) around 6 km and the steepest 200 m at 15.9%. Then the profile turns uneven: 500 m at 3%, a kilometre at 8 to 10%, a flat kilometre, and one more kilometre at 9 to 10%. The highest point, about 1111 m, comes around 11.5 km, and the road then drops some 30 m to the lakes.
Pacing tip: the calculator gives 1 h 04 min at 3.0 W/kg for a 75 kg rider. Think of it as a 7 km climb at 10% with a hilly finish, and keep something for the steep kilometre that follows the flat one.

Real climbs take longer when you start too hard, stop, or ride into a headwind. Treat the number as the pace to aim for, not a promise.
