Winter Bike Tires — What to Choose for Snow and Ice
Riding through winter isn't just about layering up — your tires decide whether you keep traction on wet asphalt, snow, and ice. Standard summer tires on winter roads are asking for trouble.
Types of winter tires
Studded tires
Metal studs embedded in the tread — the only option that gives real grip on bare ice. Available with roughly 100–300 studs. More studs means better ice traction, but higher rolling resistance on dry asphalt.
When they make sense: regular winter city riding, routes with icy patches, daily commutes. On clean snow you don't need them — the right tread pattern is enough.
Aggressive-tread tires (MTB / gravel)
Wide, chunky tread blocks grip snow, mud, and wet surfaces well. They don't work on smooth ice but perform great on snow. Popular widths: 35–50 mm for gravel/trekking, 2.0–2.4" for MTB.
Summer tires at lower pressure
An emergency option — dropping pressure by 0.5–1 bar increases the contact patch and improves grip on wet asphalt. It won't help on snow or ice.

- Get a second wheelset — swapping between summer and winter tires becomes a quick wheel change instead of a tire-remounting job.
- Road salt — it destroys your drivetrain. Rinse your bike after winter rides and re-lube the chain regularly.
- Fenders — mandatory in winter. They protect you and your drivetrain from road spray.
- Lights — it gets dark early. Good lighting is a safety issue, not an accessory.
Get the width and tread right before you obsess over pressure — a properly sized winter tire at slightly-too-high pressure still outperforms a summer slick at the perfect pressure on snow and ice.
