VLaMax — Why a Great Sprint Can Wreck Your Endurance

A great sprint costs something. Not in the sense of momentary fatigue after a burst — in the sense of how your body is physiologically wired to produce energy. VLaMax (maximal lactate production rate) is a metric that puts a number on this tradeoff: the higher it is, the stronger your sprint, but the harder it becomes to hold high power on a long, aerobic effort. Here's the mechanism, and what it means for how you train.

What VLaMax actually is

VLaMax describes how fast your muscles can produce energy through glycolysis — without oxygen, mostly from carbohydrate. A high VLaMax means a lot of power available instantly: an explosive sprint, a sudden acceleration, an attack coming down off a descent into the group. A low VLaMax means lower peak power, but also less lactate produced at a given workload — which leaves more "room" for fat burning and sustained aerobic work.

It isn't binary — every rider sits somewhere on this scale, but sprinters and endurance riders sit at opposite ends of it, not purely because of training, but because of what that training reinforces in someone with a given muscle fiber predisposition.

Why a high VLaMax hurts endurance

VO2max (aerobic capacity) and VLaMax (anaerobic capacity) compete for the same physiological "budget" at the muscle level. A high VLaMax means that at a given intensity you produce more lactate than a rider with lower VLaMax and the same FTP — and that lactate load has to be buffered and cleared, which costs energy and pushes your lactate threshold (and therefore your realistically "holdable" FTP) lower relative to your VO2max.

In practice: two riders can have identical FTP, but the one with high VLaMax reaches it closer to their VO2max (smaller margin), while the one with low VLaMax has a bigger aerobic margin underneath it. On a long, steady effort — triathlon, time trial, long road race — the second profile has the advantage, even with the same starting FTP.

If your goal is long, steady efforts (a gran fondo, a triathlon, a long time trial), too much short, very intense anaerobic interval work can be counterproductive — not because it "harms" you in a general sense, but because it systematically pushes VLaMax in a direction that works against your goal. The reverse applies to sprinters and group-finish racers, who need that anaerobic work regularly, even at some cost to base endurance.

How this connects to power zones

This is one reason why rigid Coggan zones calculated from FTP don't always capture your real profile — two riders with the same FTP and the same "paper" zones can have very different VLaMax, and therefore a different optimal split between threshold work and VO2max/anaerobic intervals.

Is it worth measuring your own VLaMax

A precise VLaMax measurement requires a lab test with lactate sampling (an INSCYD-style protocol) or dedicated field protocols with a lactate meter. Without access to that, an indirect signal works reasonably well: if short, hard intervals recover quickly for you, but long, steady threshold efforts feel relatively hard — that points to a higher VLaMax. The opposite pattern suggests a more endurance-leaning profile.
