How Cadence Affects Heart Rate and Fatigue — Better to Produce Watts With Speed or Force?

You can produce 100 watts by spinning fast with little force on the pedal, or by turning slowly with a lot of force — the power meter shows the same number either way. But your body doesn't see that number, it sees how you produced it. Cadence shifts the load between your cardiovascular system and your muscles, and that has a real effect on heart rate, fatigue, and how long you can hold a given power output.

Why high cadence raises heart rate

Faster revolutions mean more contraction cycles per minute, and each cycle needs blood delivered and metabolic byproducts cleared. The heart has to pump more often to keep up with that higher frequency of muscle work — even if the force per pedal stroke is small. This is one reason some riders feel "out of breath" at high cadence despite modest power.

Why low cadence loads muscles differently

Low cadence with high force means more mechanical work per pedal stroke. That load accumulates locally in the muscle (acidosis, glycogen depletion in specific fibers) faster than it does in the cardiovascular system. The effect: heart rate can look "calm" while your legs still feel like they're filling up — because the fatigue is taking a different route.

There's no single "correct" cadence — there's a cadence that fits the purpose of today's session. That's why choosing a gear should follow from what kind of fatigue you want to generate today, not from habit.

What to do with this in practice

If you regularly notice your heart rate "running away" at modest power, try deliberately dropping cadence by 5–10 rpm at the same effort and see if it settles. If instead your legs "fill up" despite a calm heart rate, try raising cadence to shift some of the load from your muscles to your cardiovascular system.
