When to Buy a Bike — the Best Time to Buy New or Used
A bike bought at the right time can cost 20–40% less than the same model at the peak of the season. The bike market is heavily seasonal — it's worth using that to your advantage.
Seasonal bike pricing
| Period | Prices | Why |
|---|---|---|
| March–May | Highest | Season kickoff, peak demand |
| June–August | High | Peak season, but discounts on older models start appearing |
| September–November | Lowest | End of season, shops clearing inventory |
| December–February | Low–moderate | Winter sales + new collections arriving |
The best time: fall (September–October)
Bike shops need to clear stock before winter — storage costs money. 20–40% discounts on current-year models are the norm. Selection is smaller than in spring (popular sizes go first), but prices offset the reduced choice.
New model vs. last year's leftovers
Manufacturers release "new" models every year that often differ from the previous ones mainly in color and minor component tweaks. A bike from last year's lineup at 30% off is the same bike — with different graphics.
Exception: if the new model has a meaningful change (new geometry, a switch to disc brakes, a new drivetrain), the older model may be technically inferior — but it's still cheaper.
Used bikes — when to look?
- October–November — cyclists sell gear after the season, before prices drop even further.
- January — post-holiday sales: people want to recoup cash after the holidays.
- After major races or gran fondos — some participants upgrade their gear and sell the old bike.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday
Bike shops are increasingly active in Black Friday sales. Discounts can be real (15–30%), but watch for "sales" that involve raising the price a week beforehand. Compare prices across a few retailers and track price history.
What not to do
- Don't panic-buy in spring — "I need a bike for the season now" is an expensive emotion.
- Don't finance without a real need — if you can wait 3 months and pay cash during a sale, you'll save more than the financing charges.
- Don't buy the biggest bike on the shelf — size matters. A cheaper bike in the correct frame size always beats a pricier one that's too big.
