Mandatory Road Signs for Cyclists — Which Ones You Must Know
Mandatory signs are round, blue signs with a white symbol. For cyclists, a few of them are critically important — they indicate where you must ride, not just where you can.
C-13 — bike lane
A white bicycle on a blue background. It marks a dedicated bike lane — cyclists must use it when it runs alongside the road. Pedestrians should not walk on it (unless there is no sidewalk). Riding on the road next to a C-13 bike lane can result in a fine.
C-13/16 — shared bike and pedestrian path
A sign with a bicycle and pedestrian symbol, separated by a horizontal or vertical line. A horizontal line means cyclists and pedestrians share the same space. A vertical line means they are separated — cyclists on one side, pedestrians on the other. Which side is which is determined by the position of the symbols on the sign.
C-13a — end of bike lane
A crossed-out C-13 sign. After this sign, the cyclist returns to the road. Important: transitioning from a bike lane to the road requires extra caution — make sure drivers can see you.
Contraflow bike lane
On one-way streets, contraflow lanes for cyclists riding against the traffic flow are increasingly common. They are marked with a D-1 sign with a T-22 supplementary plate or with road markings. As a cyclist, you may only ride against the flow on a one-way street where a contraflow lane has been designated.
Tempo 30 zones and residential zones
In a tempo 30 zone (B-43 with the number "30"), cyclists may use the full width of the road — in practice, they are treated equally with other vehicles. In a residential zone (D-40), cyclists must yield to pedestrians and cannot exceed 20 km/h.
Most common cyclist mistakes
- Riding on the road despite a C-13 bike lane running parallel
- Riding on a pedestrian path (sidewalk with C-16) instead of using the bike lane
- Ignoring the C-13a sign and continuing on the sidewalk after the bike lane ends
